Thousands of Mumbai’s Urban Poor to begin new year with long march on foot to Mantrayala

Sadashiv Amrapurkar, Rambhau Patil and other veterans to flag off march

Date - 31st December, 2012

On the first day of the new year, there will be thousands of people will be gathering in Govandi ( between Chembur and Mankhurd on Harbour Live) in Mumbai by noon for LONG MARCH ON FOOT  TO MANTRALAYA. Sadashiv Amrapurkar, the popular cine artist and socially conscious eminent citizen of Mumbai, will flag off the march from Govandi. Simulatenouly, in Golibar Khar West, Ram Bhau Patil, president of National fishworkers forum, along with other senior activists, will flag off the march.

Preparations are on for the march with great enthusiasm. Meetings are happening in bastis all around Mumbai with people openly voicing their grievances and concerns, bringing out some major frauds and loopholes in the present housing and land situation in slums across Mumbai. Lands of Adivasi hamlets Powai was transferred to IIT many years ago however the 7/12 title deed are still on people’s names. Some hamlets land has been taken over by FORCE 1 after Mumbai 26/11 attachs. Fisher community of Juhu Moragaon faced demolition in 2005 with local elected representatives having an eye over land but people have not permitted anyone to step over it and are still retaining possession. But now they have sensed SRA declaration in their slum, which is not acceptable to them.

Sion Koliwada is another area where the oldest of inhabitants of fisher community are fighting the battle against Sahana Builders who have used fraudulent means to grab people’s land and houses. Builders have constructed the rehabilitation building on education department’s land and are forcing people to shift there.

Another big meeting is going to be held at 6 pm in Amujwadi where more than 3000 people from 4 Batis are going to gather to discuss there issues and about their arrangements for the march that will mark the start of their renewed struggle for land and housing rights and to uncover the biggest land scam of the country involving corrupt builders, politicians and administration.
