BHUBANESWAR: Social activist Prafulla Samantara, who singlehandedly fought against Posco and got its final environmental clearance suspended by the National Green Tribunal (NGT), on Saturday demanded the project be scrapped and strong action taken against those in power, who threw laws of the land to the wind.
“The tribunal verdict vindicates the concern people have expressed over Posco project’s likely impact on livelihood, environment, ecology and most importantly on the future of villagers who will lose their land and be displaced. But the government instead of lending ear to the people, harassed them with armed police and private goons, slapped false criminal cases and put their leaders in jails for months,” Samantara told mediapersons.
He said the verdict has discussed in detail how the government desperately tried to push the project violating all laws. “All actions of the government have been proved arbitrary, unjustified and uncalled for,” he said. Samantara said the Green Tribunal’s order has left no scope for the Posco project to come up near Paradip. “It is time the project is scrapped immediately and action initiated against those responsible for torturing people,” he said
