DHANBAD: The agitation of land and job by over 3,700 families displaced 50 years back at Maithon has been supported by social activist Swami Agnivesh and Medha Patkar, who visited the Damodar Valley Corporation township on Sunday.
Swami Agnivesh said the agitation of the displaced persons of Maithon was at least five-decade old and still peaceful. He said the families diplaced by the DVC power plant had not been given job in the corporation neither were they compensated with land.
“On December 28, there was a talk between the agitating leaders of the dam site and the DVC chairman, but the displaced people could not get a positive result,” Agnivesh said alleging the Ghatwar community was deleted from the list of the Scheduled Tribes by the Jharklhand government and the Centre deliberately. Most of the families ousted by the DVC are members of Ghatwar community.
Medha Patkar said the agitation of the displaced people at Maithan would be raised at the Jan Sansad which she would convene between March 19 and 23 in New Delhi. “People of Maithon braved the force of the DVC management, still they are continuing with their peaceful agitation,” she said.
