GUWAHATI: RTI activist and president of peasant body Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti(KMSS) Akhil Gogoi on Friday alleged that Kamrup district of Assam has become the hub of the land scams in the country, with real estatedevelopers rampantly using agricultural land for non-agricultural purposes using unscrupulous means.
Akhil said that this was evident from a document from the Kamrup DC’s office at Amingaon that he had accessed through the RTI Act. “The document provides clear proof that agricultural land in Kamrup is rampantly being used for non-agricultural activities by unfair means. This is a serious violation of The Assam Land Revenue Regulation 1886 (amended),” Akhil alleged.
Citing the document, Akhil said that the DC’s office had asked the circle officer to issue showcase notices to the errant people and to submit a report on the use of agricultural land for non-agricultural activities.
“We have estimated that not less than 4000 bighas of farmland across Kamrup is being used for non-agricultural activities. This is done through unfair means and with the connivance of politicians and bureaucrats,” he said.
KMSS has called a mass demonstration – Dispur Gherao – on May 9, demanding real estate developers and unscrupulous traders return agricultural land to the farmers they procured it from.
