AHMEDABAD: A local court on Thursday turned down a plea by Narmada Bachao Andolan leader and social activist Medha Patkar demanding re-investigation by a special investigation team into the assault on her at the Sabarmati Ashram in 2002.
Metropolitan magistrate A S Desai rejected the application after the public prosecutor submitted that Patkar’s plea was filed at a belated stage, 10 years after the incident. Patkar sought an independent inquiry through her counsel, Govind Parmar, after saying the present investigation was improper. She alleged that police didn’t even make the eight persons, whose names repeatedly surfaced in witnesses’ statements, the accused in the case. One such accused person, Hemant Chauhan, has even been made a witness. On the other hand, cops didn’t attach six witnesses’ testimonies with the chargesheet.
