A metropolitan court Thursday rejected an application by social activist Medha Patkar demanding that a special investigation team (SIT) be formed to probe the assault on her at Gandhi Ashram in the city in 2002. The case dates back to April 2002 when a group of social activists and mediapersons who had gathered at the ashram to discuss communal harmony in the aftermath of post-Godhra riots were beaten up by a group of people that allegedly included BJP workers. Patkar too was allegedly assaulted.
An FIR was lodged at Sabarmati police station and subsequently a chargesheet was filed against former city mayor Amit Shah, the then BJP Yuva Morcha president Amit Thaker, Rohit Patel and V K Saxena. Last year, Patkar filed an application before the magisterial court demanding formation of an SIT to probe the case since Gujarat Police was allegedly biased in its investigation.
