Demanding relief and rehabilitation for a life of dignity
Nearly a thousand adivasis and displaced people from Jahrakhand and West Bengal are coming to Delhi on October 17th to go on an indefinite fast and dharna at Jantar Mantar.
Damodar Valley Corporation (DVC) is one of the first river development projects after independence in 50s. Nearly after 60 years the displaced people from these dams – Panchet and Maithan have not got relief yet. Nearly 40,000 people have been displaced by these and only 340 people got compensation and jobs.
DVC dam projects, a copy of Tenessey valley project of USA was the beginning of the development disaster of Independent India, which has been followed for the last 60 years through so-called planned development, resulting displacement of 750 millions of our basic work force.Progressive societies have also contributed to this disastrous process by providing intellectual and political support to such ‘development’ process.
They have held numerous, demos, fasts, strikes, bandhs etc over the years but nothing has happened till date.
Even the proposed Land Acquisition, Rehabilitation and Resettlement Bill will not provide any succour to them since R&R provisions of the Bill does not apply with retrospective effect.
Ghatwar Adivasi Mahasabha and others are the organisations taking forward the struggle.
