The New Indian Express, 26 Oct 2014, Visakhapatnam: Convenor of the National Alliance of People’s Movements Medha Patkar has demanded that the government conduct a survey of households in the slums of Visakhapatnam city to assess the actual loss or damage caused by cyclone Hudhud.
Addressing a press conference here Saturday, she said that the slum-dwellers were very badly affected by the cyclone. Saying that she had visited several slums along with many other activists, she said a comprehensive household-level survey was yet to be conducted in the city.
The social activist turned politician said that the entire data related to damaged houses should be posted on the official website of the government to make information dissemination transparent. Stating that the families had not received any material or monetary help for even temporary shelters, Medha Patkar demanded that the Andhra Pradesh government provide groceries and 10 kg rice under the public distribution system (PDS) to each family.
She wanted the government to launch the Food For Work (FFW) programme even for cleaning, repairing and other relief and rehabilitation works
Medha Patkar later submitted a memorandum to collector N Yuvaraj.
