This is absolutely shocking that the news from the Narmada Valley on world environment day is that a few million trees from the 176 villages and the township of Dharampuri are going to be submerged with the closing of the gates of Sardar Sarovar Project by 31st July. The government is however not even ready to wait for the decision, is rather to pay 4 crores to Public Works Department in single district of Badwani for clear felling of some (large) decades / centuries old tress. The destruction due to submergence or clear felling is to be an irreparable loss which cannot be compensated by on paper Compensatory Afforestation that the government has been falsely claiming before the Environmental Sub-Group (ESG). Neither Narmada Control Authority (NCA) nor Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change has till date monitored this aspect of impact on environment and ecology, nor such an enormous loss be made up by plantation of lakhs or even crores of trees rather the bushes, which the Chief Minister has been announcing day in and day out.
