The National Allied People’s Movement (NAPM), headquartered in Mumbai with quite a number of members in Pune, on Friday joined Anna Hazare’s Jan Lokpal bill movement.
The NAPM’s Medha Patkar joined Hazare at Jantar Mantar on Friday. “I definitely feel it should be a Jan Lokpal bill,’’ she told Newsline. She reiterated her support for the agitation and justified the demand for a joint committee as nothing new. It will only make the law-making process more participatory in the country.
“The NAPM emphasises the need to repeal legislations like SEZ Act, land acquisition act and other laws facilitating corruption all around,’’ said an NAPM activist from Pune. The NAPM maintains they are not trying to undermine the sanctity of Parliament or the Constitution. Any draft will finally have to be approved by Cabinet and passed by the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha. The organisation hopes it can pave the way for more progressive legislations in future and similar initiatives must be taken for the proposed land acquisition amendment act and other acts with far-reaching legislations.
With an upsurge in the country with millions of people supporting the demand, they state that agitation has given a hope for wider political awakening in the country and strengthening of the struggle against corporate corruption, massive loot of natural resources and larger institutional corruption. They have demanded that the UPA and other parties come out in public and clarify their stand on corruption. “It is not the time to hide under technicalities but the time for action and NAPM hopes the government will respond positively,’’ said an activist.
