The Times Of India, May 11 2015, Indore: A committee comprising political leaders, hydrologist, energy experts and social workers visited Narmada valley and backwaters of Indira Sagar and Omkareshwar dams on Sunday.
The visit was to verify claims of state government about rehabilitation of dam oustees and find out the social and economic impact of increasing water level of dam on tribal people, farmers and women.
The visit was organised by Narmada Bachao Andolan (NBA), whose members have been opposing the increase in water level of dams alleging that rehabilitation was not done before submerging villages and farms.
General secretary of CPM Kishan Sabha and former MP Anand Molla, general secretary of national council of the National Federation of Indian Women (NFIW) Annie Raja, former environment and energy minister of Kerala Vinoy Viswam, hydrologist Dr Raj Kachroo, social activist Dr Sunilam and energy expert Soumya Dutta were part of the team.
Medha Patkar of NBA said government is allowing increase in water level of dam without rehabilitating oustees. She alleged that rehabilitation has not been done in accordance with the guidelines of apex court.
“The team was here to verify claims of the government about rehabilitation and condition of people in this region,” said Medha adding that a report will be submitted to Lok Sabha speaker in next few days.
Meanwhile, Jal Satyagraha of farmers at Gogalgaon completed one month on Sunday and till now no efforts have been made to end the protest.
“Skin of Jal Satyagrahi is falling off but government has not steps to end the protest till now,” said Chitroopa Palit of NBA adding that they had made several attempts to start a dialogue to resolve the vexed issue.
