Nellore: A national workshop on “Destructive development” was conducted by Nellore Paryavarana Parirakshana Vedika and National Alliance of People’s Movements (NAPM) here on Saturday. The national convenor of NAPM, Mr Ramakrishna Raju, presided.
Speaking on the occasion, Jansansad coordinator, Mr Banwari Lal Sharma, felt that the need to conduct praja parliament arose as Parliament was not discussing public problems. He explained what is Parliament and its procedure.
Later, Mr Sandeep Pandey, Convenor of NA PM, said that the government should give land only as compensation when it takes farmers’ lands for public interest purpose. It was not possible, he felt, to compensate for environment loss incurred by thermal projects. The government should plan for alternate power plants, he stated.
Andhra Pradesh Human Rights Association general secretary, Mr Chiluka Chandrasekhar, said that the 28 thermal power plants were going to fill Nellore district with ash by producing one lakh tonnes of ash per day. He gave a call to the people of the district to agitate against the destruction of handicrafts, culture and traditions and the way of life.
NAPM co-convenor Ajay Kumar, Manoj Thyagi, Prof Vimal, environmentalist Dr Baburao, Jana vignana vedika founder Dr G Vijay Kumar, Paryavarana parirakshana vedika convenor M Rajareddy and representatives of several peoples’ and rights associations participated in the workshop.
