Five Hour Sit-in by Slum Dwellers before Mumbai Collector
Medha Patkar along with Slum Dwellers Held dialogue with Collector
Mumbai | 10th June, 2015: Echoing their demands, the urban poor of Mumbai struggling for housing right and basic amenities, today, reached out to the Mumbai Collector, suburban office and staged massive sit in. The five hour long dharna took place in the presence of veteran social activist Medha Patkar who advocated their demands before the Collector.
Awas Haq Satyagrah which began on 26th of May, demanding housing right to the evictees of Mandala-Mankhurd, Mumbai which was demolished in 2004 evicting 5000 families, was also joined by other slum dwellers of Mumbai which are a part of Ghar Bachao Ghar Banao
Andolan, led by Medha Patkar. Awas Haq Satyagrah entered its 16th day today, the demands raised remained unheard so far. In order to intensify the struggle, the Awas Haq Satyagrahis did the gherao of the Mumbai Collector office. Five hours of continuous dharna compelled the Collector to hold a dialogue. Finally a delegation led by Medha Patkar met the Collector. In an hour dialogue, slum dwellers from different bastisraised various issues, from basic amenities to illegal demolition, housing rights etc. When Ms. Patkar presented before the Collector, a big picture of the ill-practices going on in slums through broker-local politicians nexus, the Collector assured complete investigation in respective cases like Chandivali and Malvani-Malad. This time again the Collector found sidelining himself from the Mandala issue saying that it was a policy matter.
The Satyagrahis returned to the Awas Haq Satyagrah site with a warning of massive agitation if their issues are not resolved soon. They resolute to continue the struggle unless their demands are met.
