Relay Fast carried forward by 6 Mandala Evicted
Awas Haq Satyagrah entered 8th Day
Mumbai | 2nd June 2015: On the 8th day of the Awas Haq Satyagrah 6 Mandala evicted sat on the relay fast after 5 of them finished their fast which started yesterday. The number of fasting people will keep on increasing if the government remains silent on the demands of the Satyagrahis.
Apart from the Mandala evicted, the Awas Haq Satyagrah is also joined by the other slum dwellers of the Mumbai who are struggling for basic amenities in their slum as per Section 5A of slum act of 1971. The condition in the slum is pathetic in terms of electricity supply, water supply, toilets, schools, hospitals etc. Government of Maharashtra failed to provide land for toilets in the slum even after Swachh Bharat Abhiyan launched by the Government of India. Land for electric sub-station is not being given in the slums when Tata Power has agreed to provide electric supply. Similarly, the authorities are not cooperative in providing other basic amenities of life. The Ghar Bachao Ghar Banao Andolan under the leadership of social activist Medha Patkar has always been actively raising all these serious issue.
Mandala evicted in the absence of any meaningful dialogue has decided to intensify their struggle until they are heard. They have resolved that the relay fast would turn into indefinite fast if their demands are not met. A delegation of the evicted will try approaching the concerned authorities from tomorrow.
Meanwhile eminent social and housing right activists held meeting on 1st June 2015 in Mumbai in support of ongoing Awas Haq Satyagrah. The meeting was chaired by Prof. Dr. Uday Mehata which was joined by veteran trade union leader N Vasudevan, senior social activist Lalit Babar, Prof. Janadan Adsule , Sanjay Shinde, Omprakash bhai, Manohar Rajguru, Shamim Sajid Ali. In the meeting it was decided that a mass campaign would be launched in support of the Satyagraha and the Mandala evicted. They would also urge Government of Maharashtra to immediately address the grievances of the Satyagrahis and warn that any attempt to crush the Satyagrah would not be tolerated. It was also decided that the movement Mumbai Kis Ki? would be launch by bringing all organization under one platform.
