Trans-persons’ lives matter! End transphobia and violence now!!
24th January 2015, New Delhi: The National Alliance of Peoples Movements expresses its deep shock and outrage at the growing instances of in-human attacks on persons asserting their different and non-conforming gender identities in public spaces. NAPM believes that gender is not just a ‘lifestyle’ issue, but a life-time issue for thousands of citizens who do not conform to the male-female binary and wish to lead independent, dignified lives in private, public and political spaces.
Pravallika’s gruesome murder on 17th January in Hyderabad , followed by the police torture of her friend in the name of ‘interrogation’ are shrill reminders of the callousness with which the State and its forces treat these citizens who are entitled to all civil, political and human rights and liberties under the Constitution of India.
The NALSA judgment of the Supreme Court of India given on April 2014, which is one step forward in the recognition of the inalienable rights of trans-persons needs to be fully implemented in letter and spirit by all Governments. We hope the judiciary at the highest levels would take cognizance of these brazen happenings and react in time, with strict directives.
We call upon the common citizenry of this country that they would not just watch Satyamev Jayates in the comfort of their drawing rooms, but would come out on the streets, in solidarity, demanding action and justice, just as they did during the Nirbhaya case.
We endorse all demands of the Telangana Hijra Intersex Transgender Samiti and express our complete solidarity with friends in the Samiti. We shall be partners in our long struggle for a democratic, inclusive world with dignity and rights for all. The struggle of farmers, workers, dalits, adivasis, forest dwellers, trans-persons, women, persons from all genders and identities, hawkers, rural and urban poor from the State and within society are inter-connected and we shall join hands for a united struggle.
