CHENNAI: Members of the National Alliance for People’s Movement had organised a candlelight vigil on the Marina Beach here on Friday to highlight the demand to release activist Binayak Sen. R Geetha, advisor to the Unorganised Workers Federation, said that the case against Dr Sen should be dismissed.
He was a pediatrician committed to the cause of uplift of tribal children and was running a clinic for them. The allegations against him were false, she stated. The decision of the government to slap a sedition case against him smacks of an anti-people stand and also the fact that there was no place for defenders of human rights in the system, Geetha said.
A Chhattisgarh court had on Friday gave a life sentence to Sen and three others for reportedly aiding Maoists. The protestors stated that the doctor had served the people with devotion and helped save many lives and even as a human rights activist he had stood up in defence of the rights of the downtrodden and this kind of verdict was just not acceptable, they added
