Water ensured for Naveen Patnaik’s home turf
The Times Of India, May 25 2014,Berhampur: It pays to be chief minister Naveen Patnaik’s home turf. In one month, Hinjili block in Ganjam district can boast of having rural water supply projects in every village.
The projects have been completed in 54 of the 56 villages, official source said on Saturday. “Two more projects are in different stages of completion,” said executive engineer, rural water supply and sanitation (RWSS), Berhampur, Sitaram Panda.
The RWSS engineers are targeting to construct water projects in every village of Sheragada block by March 2015-end. It is also in Naveen’s segment. Of the 94 villages in Sheragada, rural pipe water projects have been completed in 68 villages, Panda said. “Work on 34 projects is in full swing and these are expected to complete by March next,” he added.
Other parts of Ganjam district, however, are reeling under water scarcity. The government has approved installation of 1,000 tubewells in Ganjam during the current year to tide over drinking water crisis in rural areas, sources said. The district has 21,400 tubewells.
The state government has sanctioned 80 more rural drinking water projects for Ganjam in 2014-15. At least four projects will be set up in every block. “Since Hinjili and Sheragada blocks have water projects in every village, the proposed projects will be distributed in rest 20 blocks in equal number,” said an engineer. Each project would cost from Rs 40 lakh to Rs one crore depending on the size. At present, there are 1,046 rural water supply projects in the district.
The government has also decided to have overhead tanks in all such projects, both old and new. Of the 1041, 350 have overhead tanks. “This will ensure water supply is not disrupted due to power failure,” the engineer said.
All these seem payback time for BJD. The party won both Lok Sabha and all 13 assembly seats in Ganjam in the recent elections and Naveen paid a visit to Hinjili on May 20 to thank his constituents for returning him to the assembly for the fourth successive time. Naveen has been beating his nearest rival in each election by a bigger margin. And, no wonder, money is being pumped into Hinjili quite generously. Official sources said since 2000 over Rs 1,000 crore has been spent in the CM’s constituency for development works.
